In the fall and winter seasons, it is still good to sleep early and wake up late. However, sleep will not benefit people who tend to spend the whole day inside house sleeping, watching TV or playing games. In order to maintain your health, safety and comfort during the winter, it is important to improve the quality of the air in your home especially your bedroom. Poor indoor air quality can be uncomfortable and unhealthy, and make people sick.

Two things should be avoided in regular lives: Avoid staying too late for entertainment during the night, such as Karaoke, online activities, TV and bars. This habit will interfere your biological clock. Unfortunately, modern people like to stay late. These activities squeeze our sleep time and have negative impact on your health. Avoid oversleeping or sleeping during the day to compensate lack of sleep due to busy work. Too much irregular sleep interferes your biological clock as well and is not good for the recovery of your energy, and may cause severe sleep problems later.

The proper way is to “sleep early and get up late”. In the Chinese traditional medical theory, that is to “protect Yang and cultivate Yin”.

“Sleep early” means going to bed around 10pm. Older people and children can go sleep earlier. “Get up late” means sleep until sunrise. When the sun rises, that is around 7am, “Yang” is elevating and “Yin” is dispersing.

“An hour before midnight is worth two after” This is an old saying but carries a large amount of truth. However, in modern society people are more likely to go to sleep late in the night and stay with electronic devices such as smart phones, iPads, computers and televisions till midnight. We should know getting less than the recommend amount of sleep can lead to serious health issues and even death.

Although sleep needs vary from person to person, people who sleep 6.5~7.5 hours have less risk of death. Both oversleep and sleep deprivation are unacceptable. It was reported sleeping less than 6.5 hours or more than 7.5 hours can increase the risk of death. The death rate doubles when sleep hours are less than 4.5 hours or more than 9.5 hours.

Sufficient sleep allows the body cells and tissues to repair and recover from the day. Once you have poor sleep, the growth and rejuvenation of all the body systems especially the immune system are suppressed. At night, we get the best quality sleep, and the longest blocks of sleep without waking up. Sleeping during the day is more broken up. During a reboot and beyond, you need to get good quality sleep.

We human beings are sensitive to the universe rhythm changes. We prefer to sleep at night and work during the day. It is driven by the biological clock. Even we don’t know what time it is, we still do things in cycles that go for about 24 hours. The cycle of sleep and wake is one of the most obvious circadian rhythms in humans. We all have the feeling that the later we get up in the morning, the less energy we have during the day. Our health and wellbeing depends on this ticking all the time. Optimum sleep hours for true regenerative sleep are between 11pm and 6am, known as the “Golden 7 hours”.

Staying up late is equal to slow-motion suicide
Sleep quality is best when it occurs within the body’s natural circadian rhythm. People who stay up very late are at much greater risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes and a host of health problems, no matter if they getting the same amount of sleep as those who wake up early. With the lack of sleep comes the rough dark skin and skin bags under eyes. More importantly, a lack of sleep has often been linked to a poor immune system. So it is no wonder that night owls are prone to getting sick.

Yet despite knowing that staying late could be harmful to our health, it is very difficult for night owls to get rid of this sleep habit.

Still, it’s worth trying to start the night sleeping earlier for your well-being. Becoming more disciplined on your sleep routine and going to bed one hour before midnight. A night owl can become a more healthy morning person.
